Montserrat has been a British Colony since the 17th century, still, it begun mainly by Irish settlers when Ireland was still part of the British empire. However, over the centuries, France tried to take control over the island, but without permanent success. In the 1990s, Montserrat suffered from a big volcano eruption that led to the evacuation of most of its population, including economic turmoil. Montserrat has the sovereignty status of British Overseas Territory namely, Montserrat has an appointed British Governor who acted as the Head of State, as well as an elected Chief Minister who acted as the head of the local government. Besides, Montserrat has an elected local parliament.
